I UNDERGROUND GRAVITY LAB (UGL) LOCATION
The Solid Earth Dynamics Department has developed a special infrastructure for monitoring changes in gravity related to large earthquakes all around the world. Consequently, an underground gravity lab (UGL) has been designed and constructed in the basement of the main building of the Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy.
Here, the department monitor tide / non-tidal gravity changes (especially related to the large seismic events), during the time-spans when the gravity meter is not involved in field campaigns.
TECHNICAL FACILITIES
The UGL facilities mainly consist of a special massive concrete pillar deeply grounded (1.5 m) to confer stability to the instrument during the records.
The pillar has been especially built to mitigate the influence of the deformations of the basement, leaving a space of about 2 cm between the gravity pillar and the room floor (see Fig. 2).
The CG-5 is installed on its tripod right on the top of the above-mentioned pillar, and protected with vertical space limiters/thrusts preventing him from accidentally falling down (especially in case of large earthquakes).
Minute averages of the observations are stored within the instruments’ memory.
The main data recorded are: geographic co-ordinates, record timing, instrument tilt along two orthogonal directions, temperature variations, length of the reading cycle, the minute average gravity with the related standard deviation.
The meter is connected to a PC and records may be downloaded and visualized using the SCINTREX software in combination with other visualisation programmes.
Figures # 3 and #4 illustrate a fragment of the instrument’ s record with a comparative view between synthetic gravity tide and the gravity observed in the lab.
The non-tidal gravity effect of an earthquake is clearly visible on the last part of the record.
NETWORKS - EPOCH STATIONS
REGIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE: THE NETWORK FOR MONITORING EARTH DYNAMICS ON THE ROMANIAN TERRITORY LOCAL
The Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy monitors dynamics of the lithosphere at both regional and local scale, by permanent records of the crust deformation in several geodynamic observatories (Cãldãrusani, Tulnici, Ursoiu and Crãciunesti) and systematic observations made in epoch stations grouped in several special geodynamic polygons (Fig. 1).
In order to monitor large-scale dynamics across major tectonic contacts, a special geodynamic network was designed and achieved by the Solid Earth Dynamics Department during the MODEST project (Fig. 1). It mainly consists in three geo-traverses crossing the major plate boundaries: Peceneaga-Camena Fault (PCF), Trans-Getica Fault (TGF), and Tornquist-Teisseyre Zone (TTZ).
Special steel-reinforced concrete pillars were grounded at several locations along the above-mentioned geo-traverses to offer an appropriate environment for both gravity and GPS determinations.

Each pillar was grounded about 150 cm in depth and exhibits at the surface a concrete cub of about 50 cm x 50 cm x 50 cm (Fig. 2).
Right in the center of the pillar top (which allows the installing of the gravity meter tripod), a special device for centering the GPS antenna (1) has been embedded in the concrete, for an accurate re-location each time when GPS observations are made.

LOCAL INFRASTRUCTURE: THE GEODYNAMIC MICROPLOYGON
TULNICI-VALEA SARII-VRANCIOAIA
In order to study connections between Vrancea intermediate-depth seismicity and lithosphere dynamics, right in the epicentral area was designed and achieved the Tulnici-Valea Sarii geodynamic polygon (TGP).
It has been designed by the team for geodetic & geophysical studies of the active areas with the Institute of geodynamics of the Romanian Academy (IGAR) in order to monitor crust deformation prior and after the occurrence of large earthquakes within Vrancea intermediate depth seismicity zone.

TGP mainly consists of a special network for high accuracy geometric leveling located in the Flysch Zone of East Carpathians (Fig. 1).
RTD leveling benchmarks (designed by eng. Ion Dragoescu), as well as special benchmarks for geodynamic purposes designed by IGAR (Fig. 2) were implemented in the area and systematically observed during several field campaigns.

The high accuracy repeated leveling polygon was specially designed to cross some active faults in the area: Tulnici-Paulesti, Soveja-Vrancioaia, and Negrilesti-Naruja.
Within TGP, geodetic and relative gravity observations were made during the time in order to reveal the eventual differentiated crust deformation in various tectonic compartment covered by the polygon, as a consequence of pre-, co- and post-seismic stress in the lithosphere.
