The finite element method solves the direct seismic problem is boundary or
sources have a complicated shape.
The present paper presents the general principles of the method as well as
the flow-chart of the computer programme which solves the bi-dimensional problems.
Possible solutions concerning the synthesis and simulation of bi-dimensional
seismic phenomena under an unsteady-state regime are analysed in the examples
given to illustrate the applicability of the method.
Also presented are the specific features resulting from the use of the finite
element method and from the discussion of the results when the wave propagation
is simulated near the source.
