Hazard and risk due to the activity of the Vrancea seismogenic zone. An introductory
section defines the scope of the paper and refers to some basic concepts used.
The second section is devoted to sesmic hazard due to Vrancea earthquakes. After
describing some general features of the Vrancea seismogenic zone, the recurrence
of magnitudes is dealt with. This is followed by data on the recurrence of intensities,
derived by means of coresponnding probabilistic convolutions. The cyclicity of
the seismogenic activities referred to and data referring to the forecast of
a next major event are presented. The spectral contents of ground motion and
some data on the analyses aimed at explaining observed data, are presented. The
attenuation phenomenon is then dealt with. A third section is devoted to elements
at risk and risk affecting them. Data on the impact of some past strong earthquakes
are given. The vulnerability of some categories of elements at risk is discussed.
The outcome of some parametric risk analyses is referred to. The high level of
seismic risk affecting Romania is emphasized and obstacles to its reduction are
discussed. Some final remarks are devoted to questions related to engineering
seismology and earthquake engineering.
