GEOLOGICAL AND GEOPHYSICAL SYNERGETIC RESEARCH IN SCYTHIAN PLATFORM AREA
(Abstract)
The purpose of this paper is to obtain new regional tectonic information
about the geological unit, situated in the south of the East European Platform,
called in geological literature the Scythian Platform.
The unit has a folded basement, principally of Caledonian age, with Baikalian
relic elements. In Hercynian orogenesis there were only tilt movements which
determined tectonic structures such as horst and graben.
The main structures are: lower Prut, Orelehovka-Surovov, Vilcov-Bolgrad horst
and Aluat, Sarata-Tuzla grabens. These are compressional structures, where
eocarboniferous deposits are preserved.
The existence of active faults in Mesozoic was suggested by the large thickness
variation of Triassic and Jurassic deposits.
Seismic research done in the area of the Black Sea continental shelf confirms
the existence of a few overlap relations between North Dobruja Orogen and Scythian
Platform.
The conclusion of this paper is that North Dobruja extends to the north as
far as major Sulina-Tarhankaut fault.
Key words: Platform, Scythian, Caledonian orogeny, structures, overlap relation.
