DEEP STRUCTURE OF THE AREA COVERED BY THE NEOGENE VOLCANICS
OF THE CALIMANI-GURGHIU-HARGHITA MOUNTAINS
(Abstract)
The paper presents the deep structure of the eastern part of the Transylvanian
Depression, up to the boundary with the Carpathian Orogen, inferred from a
gravimetric map of surface stripping and from an isobath map at the base of
the sedimentary formations drawn up according to seismic and drilling data.
The morphostructural elements of the basement and the systems of fractures
affecting it are evidenced in the paper. Among them, bent fault are mentioned,
related to volcanic processes din the region. They always delimit a sunk eastern
compartment on which the known intramontaneous depression settled. It is for
the first time that these depressions are structurally related, under the Neogene
volcanics, with the Transylvanian Depression.
