SOME POSSIBILITES OF QUANTITATIVE ESTIMATE
OF THE REMANENCE STABILITY
(Abstract)
Among the stability factors mentioned in the literature in connection with
the quantitative estimate of the remanence stability there is the stability
index SI proposed by Tarling & Symons (1967). The application of the index
SI is discussed in this paper. Some red marls, of different ages, sampled from
the curvature area of the Eastern Carpathians (Romania) were used for this
test. According to the SI values it was possible to divide the specimens into
four groups of stability: metastable, poorly stable, stable and very stable.
Finally, the importance of using such stability factors, especially in the
investigation of large palaeomagnetic collections, is pointed out.
