A WAY OF USING THE POWER SPECTRUM OF THE ANOMALIES
OF POTENTIAL FIELDS FOR THEIR QUANTITATIVE INTERPRETATION
(Abstract)
The paper deals with a way of using the distribution function of spectral
density of power in the case of gravity or magnetic anomalies in order to establish
the number of the main sources that cause them. It continues and completes
the work carried out in the last decade in Romania in relation to the problem
of establishing the number of the main sources that produce a gravity or magnetic
anomaly, using a quantity of energetic character.
There are mentioned the characters of the gravity or magnetic signal analysed:
potential, local, specialized, stochastic, stationary and ergotic. These characters
enable the treatment of the signal by statistical means, namely the calculation
of the power spectrum using the autocorrelation function of the analysed signal,
starting with the numerical random series – the gravity of magnetic profile.
The theoretical background of the proposed method of analysis is pointed out
and the parameters which control the quality of the analysis and the effective
procedure for practical application are indicated. The last part presents the
results obtained by testing the method in several theoretical cases and also
in a real case – the gravity anomaly mapped in the central part of the
Bihor Mountains.
By verifying the performances and limitations of the new method, these test-applications
demonstrated its capacity of establishing unambiguously the number of sources
that generated a gravity or magnetic effect.
