CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM OF INFLUENCE OF THE GROUND
PREDOMINANT PERIOD ON BUILDING BEHAVIOUR DURING EARTHQUAKES
(Abstract)
The knowledge of the ground predominant period during earthquake excitations
is important from both a national and an international point of view if we
take into account the antiseismic design.
One of the best known methods used for solving this problem was advanced by
Seed (1975) and is called "equivalent layer method".
This paper deals with the determination of the ground predominant period in
a different approach, that is, it does not use weighted averages of transverse
wave velocity, but a "quasiweighting" of periods of each layer separately,
and the transverse wave velocity values are used in computation as they are
measured by geophysicists.
This method demonstrates more obviously the manner in which the building interacts
with ground during earthquake excitations, thus leading to a more adequate
and cheaper antiseismic design.
