PALAEOMAGNETIC STUDY OF RED SEDIMENTS OF PERMIAN AGE
FROM THE MEHADIA BASIN (BANAT, ROMANIA)
(Abstract)

It is shown that the red sediments of Permian age from the Mehadia Basin present a not very high magnetic stability and a remanent magnetization of chemical origin. Nevertheless, due to the very high stability of the chemical magnetization and to the fact that it occurred simultaneously with the variation of the corresponding rocks, these may be used in palaeomagnetic research. Within the framework of the hypothesis of a possible clockwise rotation of the rock masses with an angle of 80° to 85° as a consequence of folding or tectonic activity, the position of the palaeomagnetic pole during the Lower Permian as determined in Mehadia is in good agreement with that determined in other zones in Romania as well as in different countries in Europe.
