PROCEDURE FOR COMPUTING THE HORIZONTAL COMPONENT OF THE GEOMAGNETIC FIELD MEASURED WITH A MAGNETIC THEODOLITE

Abstract

A procedure for computing the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field by means of the Gauss method is given.
The calculation relationship was obtained under the hypothesis of the linearity of the variation with temperature of the horizontal component value. For the ordinary range of the values measured in a certain observatory, this hypothesis introduces an approximation that does not affect the accuracy of the result.
Explaining the way of determination of the formula coefficients, the author presents finally the evaluation of the coefficients utilized in the Surlari Observatory for the calculation of the horizontal component of the magnetic field.
