Electrified railways, especially when fed with D.C. current, have been known for long time to endanger magnetic observatories settled in the vicinity. This is still true nowadays that standards required from data issued from observatories (such as the ones demanded by the INTERMAGNET program) have been upgraded. The paper is devoted to a general assessment of the electric and magnetic effects which can be generated by the railway, with special emphasis on their magnitude. For the first time, it is shown how the perturbations of the electric field can be calculated in the case of a stratified substratum. It is also underline the influence of the railway length to the magnitude of electric and magnetic perturbations. Formulae are given which, we hope, could be of some use to people in charge of observatories.
